For the first time since 2011’s Alpocalypse, the world will be blessed with a new Weird Al album.
Debuting on July 15, Weird Al’s 13th solo album is entitled Mandatory Fun and one can surmise that he will – thankfully – be up to the usual in it. As far as we know, it is possible that Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” will be parodied and a band that Patton Oswalt has “worshipped since the ’90s” is on it. As always, I am especially interested in hearing the original songs that will be included on the album. Of course, I’ve always loved his parodies, but his original work remains an extremely underrated aspect of his career.
As for what happens in Weird Al’s career following this upcoming album, that is up in the air. Mandatory Fun is the last album on his current record contract, which leaves him with all sorts of possibilities. He could move to straight digital releases of songs to remain as current as possible, or he could keep on releasing albums the way he has for 30+ years.
Either way, he’s not going anywhere and, hopefully, we’ll get a tour that utilizes the album’s great theme.
