Diet trends seemingly come and go every week, but the one that might stick around on the basis of actually being viable is the paleo, or caveman, diet. From my understanding, this is purely a meat, vegetables and fruit diet that cuts out all of the crap we eat without sacrificing actual nutrients and essential vitamins.
In essence, the paleo diet is a return to the basics, a strategy for eating exactly what we need to not just survive, but to improve ourselves. It’s all about remaining as pure as possible.
So are boogers paleo?
It’s not a ridiculous question. Boogers have been in the news lately as a potentially healthy choice, as Scott Napper, an associate professor of biochemistry at the University of Saskatchewan, theorized that eating boogers could be an evolutionary trait that acts as a natural way to boost one’s own immune system. By essentially infecting oneself with germs, it could bolster the body’s ability to rid itself of sickness and make a person healthier in the long run.
Boogers are the body’s way of saying, “Here, I made this for you. Now put it to good use.” It’s begging us to take advantage of this beneficial food source, much like the way it craves protein, healthy fats, carbs and vitamins from our meat, fruits and vegetables.
The paleo crowd is considered the new wave of healthy eaters, hell-bent on keeping their bodies as pure as possible, avoiding processed foods like the plague. But they can take it one step further. By eating their own boogers, fans of the paleo diet can improve their own immune system while simultaneously giving their bodies the nutrients needed to flourish.
So the next time you go on an expedition up your nose, remember that it’s for a good cause.
