There is a new woman making waves in the world of feminist art. Red waves, that is.
Seattle-based artist Mena Strell is set to debut her new series, created in the style of Jackson Pollock, by using the force of her period sneezes. She hopes that her art will empower women everywhere to see their monthly visits from Aunt Flo as a source of pride and inspiration rather than a nuisance.
“As women, we bleed for like seven years of our lives,” Strell explained. “Blood is life. Life is art. Art is power. Power is women. It just seemed like the natural conclusion that I should be splattering my period ooze on canvas and charging thousands of dollars for it.”
Each piece is as unique as the sneeze itself. But how does Strell create her art when it depends on something as fickle as sneezing on the right day? Strell let us in on her secret: “I’m actually very allergic to cats. My friends all know to lend me their cats on my heavy days.”
Strell will unveil her new series three days into her next menstruation (to be determined). The event will include a live performance piece demonstrating her process, along with a splash warning for visitors watching in the first row.
