Ugh, I just discovered police brutality against Black people, and I’m sorry, but it is NOT OKAY. As a white ally, it makes me so, so mad. Believe me, I’m probably madder than anyone. But instead of fuming all day, I think we should try to do something about it for once. It’s just a shame that nobody mentioned systemic police racism until now.
Because as someone who has been thoroughly researching this issue since yesterday, I think it’s time that everyone should know about what is happening to Black people in America. Wait, someone should call the mayor and let him know! Has anyone tried that? When he finds out Black people are 5x more likely to be incarcerated for the same crimes as white people, he’ll have to make sweeping, structural changes. After all, once somebody knows a racist system exists, their conscience would force them to act. Right?
I could be wrong, but this problem seems to be pretty widespread. My only question is how hasn’t police brutality been caught on tape in a bigger city than Minneapolis? Can you imagine if cops were caught being abusive in a town the size of Los Angeles? Yikes.
Also, did you know that the system benefits white people more? No, it’s true! I just found that out! Sometimes I wish I could go back and undo the privilege I’ve enjoyed over the last twenty-one years, but I can’t. Just know that I would if I could.
I know it seems like we should have been fighting injustice decades ago, but better late than never! Glad people are finally protesting for the first time in American history. To get started, we’re going to need a leader. I guess I can do it, but I might not always know what to say, lol. Also, maybe #BlackLivesMatter can be more than a cool hashtag. Let’s try using it as part of our new movement!
To really kick things off, I will personally start sharing informational posts to my social circle of white friends. The cool thing is you don’t even need to read them. It’s just important that you know I care. White people, I know you’ll start to see or hear things that make you feel guilty. Just know it’s not your fault, because you didn’t know!
As far as the cops, I’ll handle things with them. That usually works for me. They just say don’t speed so much and smile a bunch. So, when I tell them that they are being systematically cruel to Black people on purpose they will probably agree to change their ways. I mean, what else are they going to do? Double down on brutality? Did you know the First Amendment protects the right to protest? If we all do it peacefully and it’s protected under the law, the police who enforce the laws will ensure nobody gets hurt in the process. I mean, to vilify those they are sworn to protect… they’d have to really be pieces of shit.
As white people, we have to ask ourselves the hard questions, like where did this sudden racism come from? Like, why did none of my one Black friends mention that institutions have been discriminating against them for decades? I know that capitalism gives everyone equal opportunities, but if one race has been persecuted more than all others, then someone clearly must have made a mistake. We might need to call the president and ask to switch to socialism or communism or something. At the very least, someone should do a study on capitalism.
And finally, Black people, I’m sorry no one stood up for your rights sooner, like in the 1960s, but we’re doing it now. I can promise you that. Now, I don’t want anyone to get discouraged, but if we’re truly going to break the chains of oppression and create lasting societal change in our laws and the hearts of any racists that may still be in this country, it may take weeks. Summer could be almost over by the time we defund the police, stop brutality, and end racism. So say goodbye to patio margs!
But don’t worry, it will be worth it! We’ll celebrate afterwards and then plan the next thing we want to easily improve about society.
Ooh, someone should do something about war!
