Do you like movies? We do! Too much according to our therapist! But the silver lining of that is you now have a brand-new podcast to listen to!
Today we launch The Franchise Strikes Back, a new biweekly podcast (which you can check out on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and wherever else you get your podcasts)! Join Steve, Linton, and myself as we dive into film franchises to talk the good, the bad, and the commercially mandated. Where did a particular series go wrong? Which properties should continue forever? Which ones are so weird and bizarre it’s a miracle we got them at all? Discover the answers to these questions and more on each installment.
But why talk about franchises in particular? Whether you like it or not (sorry, Scorsese) we are currently in a franchise boom, with shared universes, reboots, and series designed to go on as long as possible driving much of Hollywood. And just like movies in general, there is both good and bad to be found within. This podcast aims to look at franchises one at a time to see how they can be carried out successfully, what causes them to fall apart, and figure out where they might go next.
In our inaugural episode we tackle what may be the most perfect franchise of all: Toy Story. We talk about how many times it made us cry, the horrifying implications of sentience for material objects, and I lose the battle with my squeaky chair (it has since been kicked to the curb as punishment).
We hope you enjoy! Stay tuned for more to come!
