Drowned victims of the Titanic, we just wanted to say: we see you. We hear you. You’re upset because you were forced to go back to your rooms and lay in bed while the room around you filled with water, while we got our own personal lifeboats on which to escape. We understand this might be troubling to you. But at the end of the day, it’s important to remember: we are on your side. We are all on the ship together. Not anymore since it’s sinking, but we were at one point.
We hate that you drowned to death even more than you do. But you know what we really hate? That you couldn’t talk to us in a more normal tone of voice as you plunged to your icy coffin. Did we push some of you out of the way to get into the lifeboats because we’re bad people? No! It’s because we’re rich, and therefore more worthy of saving. You understand, right?
Why can’t people just get along anymore? As our rafts lowered into the ocean with four people in a boat meant for fifteen, we heard many of you shouting from the deck and causing quite the scene. We all must be civil together. The real tragedy here is your inability to accept the fact that some people have a different set of circumstances than you. And that those set of circumstances lead our lives to be more valuable than yours. It’s nothing personal, really. It’s just what the rules of society dictate.
Now, anyone drowning is wrong, of course. In an ideal world, nobody would have drowned. But this isn’t an ideal world; there are always winners and losers. And in this situation, we are clearly the winners. Some of us were wearing mink, for God’s sake! You know what mink is like when it gets wet! Well, you all don’t, of course; you were too poor to ever own or even touch mink, but you get the point.
Our hearts feel like they’ve been plunged in icy water for you all. What worries us is that this tragedy has become “an attack on human life.” That’s never what this trip was supposed to be. It was supposed to be a bunch of wealthy people traveling in the height of luxury, and a bunch of uggos hiding out in storage for their one chance at a better life. Personally, we were raised to hate the sin and not the sinner, so really the blame should be placed on the ship itself and not us. If it hadn’t crashed, we wouldn’t have had to lock you in the basement and close off your limited pathways to survival in the first place!
Again, we are so sorry you all had to meet your watery demise, but we just want more acceptance and less divisiveness. Hate is hate whether it’s coming from you towards us or from you towards some other people we don’t care to associate with in public, but definitely will consort with in private. Matthew 5:44 says, “But I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you.”
I hope that quote makes you all feel better. Look on the bright side – you finally have a day off of work! We’ve had to earn those through years of hard work. You just got one handed to you for free. Try being grateful for what you’ve been given instead of asking for more.
