NASHVILLE, TN – Father of two Jeff Singletary refuses to fall into the trap of telling his children dad jokes, so he comes up with edgy and trendy comedy for them instead. “I’ve never been a fan of dad jokes,” Singletary says. “I find them corny, predictable, and too reliant on puns.”
Singletary writes material daily and tests it out at a daycare center close to his house. “I’m fortunate that the daycare has open mic night every Tuesday so I can see what material works and what doesn’t. The kids there are very generous with their feedback and they’ve really given me good advice about finding my comedic voice.”
Joe Singletary, 7, says his father’s material has steadily improved through the years. “His bit about picking us up from school had a good premise, but he needed to make it sharper. When he reworked it and compared picking us up to an Amazon driver delivering cocaine to a drug kingpin, I laughed so hard I spat out my fruit punch!”
Rachel Singletary, 6, praises her father’s work ethic. “Dad keeps a notebook with him and he’s always writing down new joke ideas and looking for inspiration for new material. When I threw up in the living room, he came running in with that notebook and immediately started making notes – he knew that he could turn the situation into a hilarious routine.”
Jeff’s hard work is paying off. “I’m able to give my kids seven and a half minutes of fresh material every night just before bedtime,” he explains. “I’ll usually start with political satire, then current events, and end with some esoteric humor. They love it when I pretend to be a pseudo-sophisticate and riff on the differences between psychology and sociology as it relates to location-based norms.”
Next Tuesday, Jeff has been booked as the opener at the Zoning and Planning Committee meeting at City Hall. Doors at 6:30pm, meeting at 7:30pm. No cover.
